Shannon Medley is a donations organizer for Gathering Friends, a homeless outreach group in Springfield. While Williams has a place to stay at night, Medley said his story — trespassing cases followed by a serious felony charge — is unfortunately familiar.

Bailey, the police spokeswoman, said officers have tablets that some use to video chat with mental health professionals. Medley said some officers show little compassion for homeless people or people with behavioral issues, but the opposite is sometimes true, too. A little bit more mental illness training and how to interact with addicted folks and how to interact with chronically homeless would be good. Even though trespassing cases are relatively minor charges, Medley said they create additional taxpayer expense in legal costs and don't address the root problem.

When the Missouri Hotel, a homeless shelter on Commercial Street, closed in after 30 years, Medley said it led to an increase in panhandling. About people could stay there a night, Medley said, and there hasn't been as much shelter for the homeless since.
