Windhelm is plagued by a shadowy killer. I have been asked to help investigate the latest murder. At the Windhelm graveyard you will encounter a guard looking into the quite recent murder of Susanna. Talking to the guard will launch the quest. But before the Dragonborn can look into the matter, the proper authorization is required. For this visit the Palace of the Kings and talk to the steward Jorleif who will gladly let you help out.
Return to the guard at the graveyard, who will suggest to talk to the three witnesses there: Calixto Corrium did not see much of the murderer but does suggest it was a "him"; Silda the Unseen only heard a cry but was too late at the murder scene; and Helgird noting that a purse was still on the body, suggesting this was not a robbery. A frustrated Wuunferth will claim that he was investigating the murders as well, and will shout that this isn't over when the guard drags him to the barracks.
At this point it is impossible to talk to any of the characters, but there's an ominous feeling that something is terribly wrong and that Windhelm may not be freed from the nightmare just yet.
Wuunferth the Unliving, the only person with the answer, will be behind bars and will offer no information. After three full calendar days spent outside Windhelm, you will see a familiar scene upon your return. A guard will be standing next to yet another slain victim she is on the right of Candlehearth Hall when looking from the Palace of the Kings : an Altmer named Arivanya from Windhelm Stables. The guard will be devastated and quick to inform you of your failure.
A new quest with the same name will pop up in your journal, and the guard will suggest you remedy your mistake by talking to the imprisoned Wuunferth. Head to the barracks underneath the Palace and speak to the wizard. When you tell him that the Butcher has claimed yet another victim, he will point out that he is behind bars and make a jab at your abilities as an investigator. When you tell him about the journal and the amulet, he will deny any knowledge of a journal and will ask for the shape of the amulet.
He will then identify it as the rare and legendary Necromancer Amulet. While he will reject Calixto's Wheelstone theory on the spot, he will reveal that he has noted a pattern in the location and timing of the killings, and will end up asking you to keep watch in the Stone Quarters at night, as he predicts the killer will strike again.
When you head outside, the Stone Quarter will be incredibly quiet. During the night, the entire market is usually devoid of people, although a guard may be present. You can spot the murderer following his final potential victim through the graveyard and the alley and up the steps into the market from the east. As they enter the market, you will witness elderly museum owner Calixto Corrium sneak up behind a female citizen normally Arivanya , but another woman will be randomly chosen if she is already dead , with his knife drawn for the next kill.
You can attack on sight or use a spell on Calixto and save one of Windhelm's young ladies. If you fail to dispose of him before he slits her throat, or if you attack Calixto and save her, he will panic and take off at a running pace towards his necromancer chamber in Hjerim.
Follow him and be ready for a fight, though Calixto shouldn't pose much of a problem. When he falls to the ground, loot his dead body for the now restored Necromancer Amulet if you sold it to him and a few other valuable items. Make sure to pick up his key as it will help you reveal the truth behind his murderous scheme. If you managed to slay him outside, the guards will now arrive, but will do nothing but point you towards Jorleif for one final conversation.
Jorleif will thank you, and say that the guard will be more cordial to you in the future. If you slay him outside with ranged attack even if guard's present after you loot the body guard will not approach but continue to patrol the area. While optional, it is worth your time to pay a visit to Calixto's now abandoned museum of curiosities, just to find out the reason for all the bloodshed.
In the upstairs area, you will find his chest, unlocked with the key you claimed from his body. Inside are all of his embalming tools, along with the first part of his Journal. When reading through it, it becomes apparent that the untimely death of his sister Lucilla drove him to madness and that the murders, body parts and necromancer rituals were all part of a desperate attempt to bring her back to life.
This quest is triggered by a counter that starts at the beginning of the game which will increase each time you visit the city of Windhelm or the immediate surrounding area. When it reaches four, the Blood on the Ice quest will be available, although two more conditions must be met:.
The easiest way to trigger the quest is to walk back and forth between Windhelm Stables and Brandy-Mug Farm two-three times, then enter Windhelm between 7pm and 7am.
If the graveyard scene is not triggered by this, there's little hope you can trigger the quest at all. NOTE : You can always check whether or not you have met the requirements for the quest to start, as the lock to Hjerim will change from a "key required"-lock to a Master-level lock when the quest becomes available.
If Tova and Arivanya are alive, the quest has not yet initiated because the counter is less than four, and you obtain a key to Hjerim, then you can trigger this quest by entering Hjerim with that key and picking up one of the Beware the Butcher!
However, the quest will not start in the same way as outlined in the walkthrough above; you will have to figure out what to do on your own without help from Jorleif, however all of the same options will be open to you except that none of the witnesses will be present in the graveyard; you can sell Calixto the Strange Amulet, you can have Wuunferth arrested or talk to him to catch Calixto, and you will have to talk to Viola in order to continue on with the quest after picking up a pamphlet.
If you speak to Wuunferth directly, instead of Jorleif, then Calixto will attempt to murder Arivanya in the Stone Quarter.
If you choose to have Wuunferth arrested, then Arivanya will be found murdered. At this point, if your Lockpicking Skill is high enough you may attempt to pick the lock; otherwise you will need to speak to several different NPC's around town in order to acquire the key.
Either way, enter the abandoned house to continue your search. Upon entering the house, you quickly note the presence of cobwebs and a thick layer of dust on its interior surfaces; it appears that nobody has been here in a long time.
Upon closer inspection though, you notice another trail of blood smears leading to a small chest that has been pushed up against the far left wall. It too bears spatters of blood on its surface, and within you find a number of pamphlets warning of the night creature its author, a local woman known as Viola, calls "The Butcher", along with a journal.
Read the journal, and it speaks of the horrible intentions of its owner. In it is described a motive behind the murders, which is that the killer is collecting body parts for some nefarious purpose. This is one seriously disturbed individual! Moving farther into the house, you notice a wardrobe and a bookcase on the far wall, and another wardrobe to your right as you enter a small alcove. The wardrobe yields only a few articles of clothing, but the bookcase next to it has several more of the pamphlets you encountered in the chest, as well as a strange amulet lying beneath them.
As you examine the other wardrobe, it reveals a false back that can be opened, leading into a secret room filled with the bloody, skeletal remains of prior victims strewn about the floor.
An operation table sits in the center, its surface marred with congealed blood, and to its left is a set of shelves bearing the implements with which these bodies were dissected. Upon one of the shelves is another journal, this one just as graphic as the previous one and further detailing the owner's intention to use the collected body parts in some sort of necromantic ritual.
Furthermore, it indicates that its owner doesn't quite have all the components needed, necessitating yet another murder, and soon! Having gathered these key pieces of evidence, you're now done here. With all of this evidence in hand, head back outside and speak with the first city guard you see.
Ask about the strange amulet and you'll be directed to speak with a Windhelm resident who operates a sort of curio shop, and who might know more about it because of his known interest in items such as this. Ask about the pamphlets, and the guard will tell you that its author has been at this leaflet campaign for months, ever since the murders started, ostensibly to raise awareness of the dangers but instead is viewed as somewhat of a nuisance by both the city guard and the local populace.
Speak to the curio shop owner and he'll tell you that the amulet is one typically carried by the Jarl's court wizard, and offers to buy it off you for gold. Players can also talk to Helgrid in the Hall of the Dead for some additional information on the victim's autopsy, although it is mainly irrelevant for completing the quest.
Further inspecting the body will reveal a trail of blood. Following the trail will lead to Hjerim, an abandoned house in Windhelm. Unfortunately, Hjerim can't be accessed without a key or good lockpicking skills. Bringing this up with the guards will direct the player to Tora Shatter-Shield, the mother of the previous owner of the house.
Talking to Tora will reveal that she has a key to Hjerim that players can use. Simply talk to her and she will grant the players a key to the house. Alternatively, players can steal it from her if they are proficient with Pickpocketing or pick the Master lock on the door of Hjerim. Once players enter the house, they might notice that a pamphlet named "Beware the Butcher" is lying on a shelf.
Players can choose to continue investigating the house or seek out the writer of this pamphlet named Viola Giordano. If players wish to do the latter, they can find Viola in the Candlehearth Hall in the evening.
Talk to her and she will assist the player in investigating the house. This is totally optional, and won't affect the quest significantly. Regardless of the player's decision to seek Viola's assistance, entering Hjerim will reveal a rather sparse home with a few objects to inspect. Walk up to some of the items in the room and interact with them to investigate.
If the player brought Viola with them, she will have additional dialogue pertaining to the Butcher and how the town is not investigating the murders due to the Civil War. After investigating the wardrobe on the ground floor, players will find a panel that leads to a hidden room. Inside the room is a Strange Amulet that is beside a necromancy altar.
