Luna Kim. Jey Rhy. April Toledo. Boogie San Juan. Stahr is also an author or co-author of very influential textbooks in soil science for German speaking countries Germany, Austria, Switzerland. One of these books is the classic "Textbook of Soil Science" now on its 16th edition.

Jose L. Bacusmo firmly believed that the occasion tackled relevant issues that would somehow solve some of the challenges in modern day agriculture. On the other hand, Hon. Angelo B. Florentino Tesoro, narrated the importance of the soil. Palmones said, that the soil provides the basis for food and fiber production; supports a diversity of plant, animal, and microbial life; regulates nutrient cycles and gas exchange with the atmosphere; and cultures our inner feelings for home, for place, and for renewal of spirit.

He even mentioned the challenges confronting soil scientists worldwide as cited by Dr. Sam Fujisaka, a California agricultural anthropologist. These are: 1 Soil scientists will have to work in a more interdisciplinary and holistic context if they are to help solve currently important problems; 2 Soil sciences and other sciences must face the issue of "trade-offs" which arise from the opposing needs to exploit soil and other resources in ways which benefit individuals and society; 3 Soil science needs to address issues that are important rather than those that are merely interesting; and 4 Soil scientists may have to become more "activist".

Palmones is also a strong supporter and advocate for the protection and conservation of the environment and natural resources. Other initiatives spearheaded by Cong. Other papers presented during the plenary session were "Challenges to Sustainable Crop Production" by Dr.

Literally, he had to get down on his knees and plant the ginger head up in order for it to grow the right way. So what is taken for granted by everyone else, he considers a treasure such as a piece of good, harvested ginger. And so he narrates his amazement for such petty details, and how he later realized that there is science to everything he is doing; science and good, old TLC tender loving care to match his green thumb. Broadcasting, Nature and Science Meet. This is where he got his training on the basics of broadcasting and production.

After college, he moved to Manila and joined Radio Mindanao Network as a reporter. Through hard work and determination he moved up the ladder to become the News Director of the network. The interest in Science and Technology came in as he began campaigning for the protection of the environment.

Along the process, he realized that there is more that can be done for the environment, if he incorporates science into his cause, and then began his interest in Science and Technology. During the Process. What started as a campaign for the environment became a campaign for Science and Technology, which came about through his process of learning. As he continued his advocacy for the environment, he realized that the preservation of nature cannot stand without the help of science and technology, and that involves research and development as well.

From fighting against meat importation, improvement of crop production and rain fall utilization, to him, it all boils down to science. If there is no improvement and no utilization of research and development, the country will remain stagnant, and will eventually digress to poverty and ignorance. Hence, the fight to push science and technology in all aspects, and to continue the learning process, is essentially important for Congressman Palmones to further champion his cause for the environment.

Expanding his horizon from broadcasting to law-making, he believes it is important to continue learning about his advocacies, which of course is not an easy task. Through self-education, he tries to implement and create laws that would be beneficial for the Filipino people.

Such things as improvement of quality harvests, filing a bill for food safety, combating fish kills and overstocking are just some of the many projects that Mr. Palmones takes on, with the hope that science and technology could improve and make lives easier. What Has Been Done. Apart from the many projects he is involved in, the Congressman confessed that he has two pet bills he is pushing to pass. His aim in this bill is to protect the equipment that the government has invested on, resulting to better utilization of these items that can improve lives.

To Mr. Palmones, there is always a need to protect the laws and the efforts being exerted by the government, so that there is nothing put to waste. The second project that is close to his heart is the Final Forest Limits Act , which is also pending in the Senate. Since both bills are awaiting its decision in Senate, he still continues to make numerous bills, and has actually been successful in many occasions.

Some of the bills which he authored are already implemented into laws. Some of these are: RA : An act conferring upon members of the Sangguniang Bayan, SangguniangPanlungsod and SangguniangPanlalawigan, the appropriate civil service eligibility under certain circumstances, and for other purposes, RA An act decriminalizing vagrancy, amending for this purpose Article of RA , as amended, otherwise known as the Revised Penal Code, RA : Geology Profession Act of , to name a few. Although this is the case, the problem of fish kill arose, and it is overstocking and dirty water that caused this disaster, which can only mean that the NIPAS Act was not duly implemented in this area.
