Saint-Aubin is a Cote de Beaune appellation located in a dry valley bordering the well-known village appellations of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. While maybe not as famous as its illustrious neighbours, Saint-Aubin produces excellent quality wine, particularly when it comes to Chardonnay. Three-quarters of the vineyard sites have Premier Cru status, and some of the best climats sit around the hamlet of Gamay, also known as the home of the Beaujolais grape variety of the same name.
With some steep slopes amongst its hectares of vineyards, the altitudes of Saint-Aubin vary between and metres, and the white grapes prefer the limestone-rich white clay soils found at the east end of the valley.
Chardonnay wines from Saint-Aubin are rich yet elegant, with a distinctive freshness and notes of almond, flint and white flowers giving way to beeswax and marzipan when aged. Saint-Aubin Pinot Noir is bold and spicy, with Morello cherry and blackberry notes, becoming more supple and complex with time.
